- >This Amiga is just very correct looking in anticipation of the departure
- >from the "pizza box" style of things brought upon us by unimaginative
- >American engineers and I beleive AT are setting a trend with this new
- >machine for Amiga.(before we get behind the cutting edge this time)
-
- What AT needs is a new AMiGA that is running the new Surfer Packet at a
- resonable speed which gets some recognition in the public for its profesional
- and easy to use technology and not just a new A1200 with a new system bus
- option and some minor changes of the chip set and a new design box.
- So why does the new Walker run 030`s? Do you still buy 386`s or slow 486`s?
-
- What AT could have done very quick is sell an 060 board with the 4000 Towers
- if they would have agreed about the conditions selling the Cyberstrom from
- Phase5 together with the Amiga. But it looks like AT is just pushing the AMiGA
- to the low-end market forgetting that the AMiGA is not and can not be the game
- machine of former times regarding the 64-bit consoles. It has to establish
- its market as a real alternative PC, like the Apple computers did in some
- market segments. Selling a 14.4 Modem with the Surfer Packet points to the
- same direction. That is outdated technology that is cheap to buy but makes
- the German Telecom smile, because here in Germany you have to pay for every
- call even in the local-loop on a per-time basis. So it`s unusable. (Dave
- Haynie agreed). There is still a low- end market but it is obviously getting
- smaller and smaller for the AMiGA. In my opinion you can`t successfully sell
- lots of low- cost machines if you don`t have high- end machines that are state
- of the art. The PC has that machine so they can sell low-end machines for web
- surfing.
-
- So I don`t like the new design. It looks like an egg in a wind channel and
- doesn`t make any sense for a computer. It is a lot bigger than it has to be by
- having to much curves and it looks very strange from my point of view. A
- computer has to look serious and professional. On the other hand a modular
- AMiGA is a great idea and could lead the AMiGA to a successful future. But we
- don`t need a new look, we need new improved technology and better public
- relations so that people don`t ask you anymore: "Does the AMiGA still exist?"
- or "Isn`t the AMiGA the game machine? (having only seen the A500 and similar)
- if you are talking about the AMiGA at University.
-
- Thinking that web surfing will be done by using a normal TV is also a curious
- idea because nearly no TV can display text at an acceptable quality. They
- are not designed for that purpose.
-
- The biggest problem at all seems to be the software market which is totally
- broken down. I spoke to some software engineeres at the CeBit from well known
- AMiGA Software Companies and they told me neither former Commodore nor AT has
- even contacted them, offering support. That was really a shock for me because
- this is normal on all other platforms. So this is probably the reason
- why for example there are a lot of word processing programs but most of
- them not comparable to WORD on PC (which isn`t perfect at all of cause)
- There were CATS and Developer Packets but I`m talking about different things.
-
- >... and with it's standard EC030/40 processor being able to be swapped out
- for a PPC604 and others it seems a very sensible little machine.
-
- Hopefully the PowerAMiGA won`t have an AT-bus in the higher models!
-
- >It's a shame it doesn't have any advances on the AGA system of things but
- >hey it's a new look a new attitude and it's the first new and different
- >product to come from AT.
-
- The Walker is still just a prototype so let`s hope they will fix the design to
- some serious and kewl looking machine before it`s in production.
- There is a company in germany called RFT which thought they could sell their
- TVs with "Colani" design and old technology. They didn`t succeed either.
-
- This is no offense. I`m just trying to push the AMiGA to a direction of which
- I think it could be the future.
